"Anything I can leave behind that inspires and shows the younger generation how devoted I was — that will hopefully plant a seed they can pick up and advance further" — Chew (Matt Odle)
Matt "Chew" Odle was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1976. From an early age he embraced a desire to create — beginning as a self-taught artist, sketching in pencil and developing an instinct for large-scale work. In 1991, as a teenager, he developed a strong interest in graffiti, running with a prolific crew whose work was up all over the city. That early experience — painting large surfaces, developing characters, mastering the wild style — became the foundation of everything that followed.
As he grew older, Chew transitioned from underground work to public commissions and gallery exhibitions. He uses the skills developed over three decades of professional practice across an expanding range of media: graphite, markers, acrylics, watercolor, and spray paint. His work is best known for wild-style lettering, characters, portraits, and landscapes — often combining elements across a single canvas in ways that carry both the energy of street art and the intention of studio practice.
Provocateur Gallery represents Chew directly. His work has been exhibited in galleries and can be found in public venues throughout the United States. He continues to develop his practice in the studio while completing commissions nationwide.
Chew's work moves fluidly across media — from graphite sketch to spray paint and everything between. Understanding his practice helps collectors appreciate what makes his work unique.
Graffiti since 1991 — a foundation, not a genre
Chew's training came from the street, not the academy. Starting with graffiti in 1991 as a teenager, he developed the ability to work at scale with confidence and control — qualities that translate directly to the studio. Wild-style lettering, large characters, and compositional boldness are skills earned over 30 years of practice on demanding surfaces under demanding conditions.
This background gives his fine art work a muscularity that purely academic training rarely produces. There's nothing tentative about how Chew approaches a surface.
Graphite, markers, acrylics, watercolor, spray paint
Chew works across the full spectrum of available media. A single work might layer graphite line work, acrylic paint, and spray — using each material's properties where they excel. This fluency across media is part of what makes his studio output difficult to categorize. It resists easy placement within a single tradition or movement.
He is known for wild-style lettering, characters, portraits, and landscapes — sometimes in combination, sometimes in isolation. The work is recognizable across subjects because the hand is always present.
Unique studio works and limited edition prints
Chew's available works include both original one-of-a-kind studio pieces and limited edition prints derived from selected originals. Originals are unique objects — the actual surface Chew worked. Limited editions are produced in strictly controlled numbers on archival substrates, signed and numbered by the artist.
For collectors seeking the most direct connection to the artist's hand, originals are the strongest choice. Limited editions provide a documented, authenticated entry point at a lower price threshold.

Street art origins have proven to be a significant value driver in the contemporary art market — Banksy, Invader, and KAWS being the most prominent examples. Artists who developed in street contexts bring a scale confidence and rawness that academically trained painters rarely achieve. Chew's 30+ year career, institutional gallery presence, and multi-media range position him well within this category for collectors looking beyond the most obvious names.
